Bonclarken in the Summer

Many of us made it to Bonclarken for the Women’s Ministries Annual Meeting and were even able to stay over for Family Bible Conference. (I haven’t been able to stay for FBC yet, but I’m trying to make it work out for next year!)

2013 Showcase Table

We did have a nice display at the Showcase on Tuesday afternoon.

Here is a picture of our table, with Ruth Anne Gibson. This was a group effort and I am so glad Ruth Anne and Lil Summerville were able to help put it all together. Lynn Robinson provided the bath salt give-aways.

The Annual Meeting was well attended and covered a lot of good business and encouragement from members of the Board. Some of the business included the fact that there will be some changes in how the money is passed on to Women’s Ministries (Synodical) from the Presbyterial treasurer. New forms should be coming out in the next few weeks.

The big announcement is about next year’s Annual Conference. Next year is the 100th and Nicole McCoy and the committee are already busy making sure it is a great one. Christian speaker and comedienne Ellie Lofaro will be the main speaker, and there is a concert Sunday afternoon with Kathy Troccoli. This promises to be different from past Annual Meetings. With a speaker like Ellie Lofaro and other events including a worship service Sunday night led by Dr. Derek Thomas, we see this as a women’s conference, with a short business meeting Monday afternoon. We are excited about this and hope women from all over the denomination will get excited and make plans to go to

Jubilee Birthday

We also heard from Judy Buis, retired missionary and Jubilee Birthday lady, and voted to add Shelia Osborne as the new Birthday lady, joining Nannette Howard.

 

Spiritual Life

Dear Ladies,

March, 2013, is almost gone and Easter too – the time we celebrate our Lord’s Resurrection. I pray you are having a good year with your Bible study and prayer time. These are so important to enrich our Spiritual Life. Don’t forget to plan for Spring Retreats or at other times of the year. Also, remember to plan something special for National Day of Prayer on May 3rd.

Another idea is to have a brunch or luncheon on a Saturday with a special guest speaker. This can attract younger ladies who cannot come during a week day.

It is not too early to start thinking about our ARP Women’s Ministries annual meeting on July 29th at Bonclarken and the Family Bible Conference on July 29th-August 1st. Continue to pray for our Nation, our Denomination, our missionaries, and young people, as well as your own church.

May God bless you in all you do for our Lord. Let me hear from you and what you are doing in Women’s Ministries.

A note from Ruth Anne Gibson, Family Care Chairman. I would like to encourage all ladies to promote the youth activities at Bonclarken in your churches!

Its time to plan for summer so visit the Bonclarken website: www.bonclarken.org and check on camps for more information for: Horizon June 17-23, Quest June 24- 29, Music Drama July 7-12, Music Conference July 14-19, Camp Bonclarken Session 1 July 21-26 and Session 2 July 28-Aug 2.

And for the WHOLE family – Family Bible Conference July 29-Aug 1.

Tips for Coordinating

Tips for Women’s Ministry Presidents and Coordinators

  1.  Talk to your predecessor.  Ask for helpful information and any advice she may have for you.
  2. Create a notebook ; it could contain our Presbyterial constitution or your local one.  It is also a good idea to have a record of what must be done during the calendar year.  Any information on how those events were handled is always helpful.
  3. Contact information.  Have addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of your board and church ladies.  Our websites, arpwm.org and firstarpwm.org, also contain much helpful information.
  4. It would be wise to set meeting dates well in advance, if possible.  This would include your local board meeting, circle meetings, special events, etc.  Get them on everyone’s calendars, especially the master calendar of your church.
  5. Communicate!  Always stay in contact with your board, especially.  Remind them of meetings or any information you require from them.
  6. Delegate your work to your board.  That’s what they are there for.  It is more rewarding, less stressful, and more fun to work together.
  7. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.  From your Board, from First ARPWM or from ARPWM.  That’s why we are here.  Also, your pastors want to help you, especially if you have questions on the Bible study for the year.
  8. Keep your pastors informed about what is going on in your women’s ministry.  Some churches have the women’s ministry president give a report to Session at some point or have your year-end report entered into the Session minutes.
  9. You may not have a traditional women’s ministry; but if you have women and they meet together, you do have a women’s ministry.  Remember that our vision statement says that we exist to “encourage and equip the community of ARP women to minister together for God’s glory and purpose.”

This will not be information overload, we promise. Just the occasional email to pass along information about First Presbyterial and Women’s Ministries. From the 2012 President

It has been a joy to serve as Presbyterial President this year.   Our vision statement says that we exist to “encourage and equip the community of ARP women to minister together for God’s glory and purpose.” This purpose involves discipleship and growing together in Christ. Not all of us have traditional women’s ministries; but if you have women who meet together, you do have a women’s ministry.

If we invest the time to get to know each other and develop relationships, it will change the face of our ministry.  We invite your ideas as to how we can get to know each other better. Please write to me, Laura, and our board. We want to hear what is going on at your church; we want to listen to what you need.

Our board has discussed adding a position to reach out to non-English speaking churches, but that will not be voted on today. It is still under discussion; so I present it not as business, but information. Veronica Unda, will help us reach out to these churches this coming year, as we further consider how we can best connect with them. From our ARPWM board meeting last weekend, I have several things to share:  The board has proposed changes in the bylaws, which will be voted on at the 2013 Annual Meeting: 1. That the advisor appointed by Synod, (and that this role currently falls to the Director of Central Services)  be added to our bylaws. This codifies Synod’s action. 2. As an outreach of encouragement to the church plants, the Board approved sending Seminar invitations (Woman to Woman) to the wives of those pastors and offering to waive the fees for up to three women in their church plant who would like to attend, one of which hopefully would be the pastor’s wife.  Invitations will go out during the registration period for any given Seminar date. Two further notes: most Presbyterial presidents had as their greatest passion developing relationships. Next, a report on giving: it is down. Please take note of this. In our own Presbyterial, about 15 of our 80+ churches have given financial support this year–($2 per woman in your church per year).

Please use available resources to stay connected: our websites—arpwm.org and firstarpwm.org. The ARP magazine, which always has helpful information, will be our focus for 2013, following our current focus, Bonclarken . Our suggested study books on the epistles of John are listed in the bulletin. There are excellent study guides available on the arpwm.org website, which you can download on your computer. I have several sets that I have brought for you to see at the Bible study workshop.

One more request: please complete the contact sheet that was at the registration table. Also, help us correct errors in current contacts. Don’t forget our upcoming retreat, Nov. 2-3 at Bonclarken.  You can still register.     Lynn Robinson

“Reaching Out” for Past Presidents

Since our Presbyterial will be focusing on the ARP magazine in 2013, try to come up with some ideas that could be easily implemented at your church.  Perhaps your circles can help to plan some activities which will feature the ARP.  If your church does not already do so, see if maybe your church would consider giving a free one year subscription to families who join in 2013.  Also, don’t forget that there are good ideas in the ARP which families and churches can use.

Also, as Past President, your job is to see that the bylaws for your women’s ministry are current or if they need some adaptations or deletions.  A committee of three would be a good group to work on this.

We have tried to encourage reaching out to nearby ARP churches, ARP Hispanic and ARP Korean churches.  We have tried some area meetings.  A member of one of our Hispanic churches has agreed to work with our board to reach out and encourage our Hispanic ladies to interact with us more often.  Hopefully, we will find a member of one of our Korean churches who would also be willing to work with us in reaching out to women’s ministries with Korean memberships.  If you have a large church and are having a special event and or special speaker, consider inviting nearby churches to the event.

Lastly, try to help to publicize and encourage attendance at your meetings, our Presbyterial annual meeting, and retreats.  Don’t forget that our next Presbyterial retreat will be held at Bonclarken November 2-3, 2012.  There will be seminars for a wide variety of interests, good speakers, music, fellowship, and a time to refresh your spirit.  Hurry, if you have not registered, contact Barbara Sherrill at dalesherrill@bellsouth.net for more information.  You don’t want to miss this!
