Annual Meeting Update

Greetings!

The 104th Annual Meeting of the First Presbyterial Women’s Ministries met August 20th, 2011, at Pressly Memorial ARP Church in Statesville. Minutes available here.

First Presbyterial President Vicki Marsh presided over the meeting. Lisa Myers, VP of the Pressly Memorial WOC welcomed the women, and Dr. Stephen Myers gave the Invocation.

The Missionary Speaker was Judi Hodges, formerly a Jubilee Birthday Lady supported by the Women’s Ministries. Judi Hodges shared how we mimic and resemble the people we spend time with. She humorously told us how she looks in the mirror and sees her Mom, and how she hears her Mom come out of her very own mouth! People will say, “You’re just like your Mom.” God wants of to have this same family resemblance in His Family. He is calling us to be like His Son, to invite Him into every aspect of our lives. Judi prayed that our reflection will be that of Christ!

The Keynote Speaker was Valerie Shepard, wife of Walt Shepard and daughter of Jim and Elisabeth Elliot.

Valerie Shepard shared the need for prayer. She challenged us to begin prayer groups for our pastors and churches. She told us that God is most glorified when we are desperate for His help, because He’s in the business of helping His children. She said we, as women, are quick with our tongues. We tend to share our troubles with 5-10 friends! The problem is that they do not have the same heart as God. We should take our problems to the Lord, and leave them in His lap. Here is the prayer she shared:

Lord Jesus, pour out a spirit of grace and supplication upon me and upon Your body the Church!  Build us and transform us to become a house of prayer for all nations!  I long to be a dwelling place for Your Spirit as you shape me into a purpose-filled, Kingdom-advancing disciple.  May Your house be known for prayer that delights Your heart and moves Your hand!

Val also shared another favorite quote, from Janet Erskine Stuart:”When we get our own way, we nurse a hideous idol called self, but if we give up our own way, we GET GOD.!”

After special music from Lindsay Hunt and Cathy Lefsky from Coddle Creek ARP, we took a break for lunch. The meeting resumed to deal with the business for 2011. The vote on the meeting date was approved for the 3rd Saturday in October. The slate of officers provided by the nominating committee was approved. The new President of First Presbyterial, Lynn Robinson, rose to speak and close us in prayer. She reminded us that Jesus was the most dependent person on the earth. If he needed to be close to God in prayer, how much more do we. She challenged us to pray for her and the Board and for each other this year.

The meeting ended with the Treasurers session and the Showcase where the officers and committee chair men were available to review materials and pick up packets.

A Letter from the President

president of First Presbyterial, of course.

Dear Ladies of First Presbyterial,

I hope that this letter finds you well and looking forward to attending our Annual Meeting at Pressly Memorial Church in Statesville on Saturday, August 20, 2011.  The ladies there have been working diligently to make it a great experience for all of us.  If you have not already done so, please let them know that you plan to attend by emailing your “rsvp” to presslymemorialarp@gmail.com.  This will give them an approximate “head count” for the lunch which they will provide.

Our speakers will be Val Shepherd and Judi Hodges. Both will have an excellent message.  Some lovely music will also be an integral part of the program.  After our meeting, there will be a workshop for your treasurers and a showcase with additional information (and candy) for you.  We are usually done by 1:30 or 2:00.

Besides installation of officers for the 2011-2012 year, we will be voting on a proposed change of date for our annual meeting beginning in 2012.  As you may remember, we voted at last year’s meeting to go back to a January – December year.  To transition into it, incoming officers would serve from September 2011 thru December 2012.  Thereafter, officers would serve a January – December term.  Your board felt that an October Saturday would be better with this change for several reasons.  We currently meet on the third Saturday of August.  We are voting to change the meeting to the third Saturday in October. First, this will allow 3 months transition time from old to new officers—time for leadership training or possibly a retreat for orientation (this is your local group’s decision if you would like to take advantage of this time).  Secondly, August has been a difficult time for many of you to attend because our current date is often vacation time or time to take your child to college, etc.  Most of our Presbyterials currently meet on our date so it is nearly impossible to get someone from our Synodical board to attend.  Thirdly, changing your year to a calendar year does not mean that you have to change your Bible study.  Some groups find that the current year study needs a bit more time or you may choose a summer option such as a ladies meeting with combined circles once or twice during the summer or just taking the summer off.  It is your local church’s option.

According to our bylaws, each church may send 4 voting delegates to the annual meeting.  It is suggested that they be 1. president or vp as alternate, 2. treasurer or any member of the board, and the last two are at large from the women of that church.

There will be a series of “area” meetings taking place in the coming year.  Your church will be notified of the time and place for yours. The first will be held on September 17th at First ARP Church in Gastonia. The Hendersonville group will meet in October. If you would like to host a meeting at your church for churches in your area, let me know.

It has been a privilege and an honor to serve as your president this year.  May God Bless You All!!!!

Pray
We had the sad experience of seeing yet another couple leave the church plant core group—too much work, they said, and they want “a real church building to come to–not a living room!” We are not near the renting a facility stage, and yet we are asking the Lord for a musician and a facility that would work with us as we grow and are able to pay more rent.
The musician I had set my heart on is being considered by a local church in the area. It would be great to have him available to help us, if the other church would bring him down here. We shall see.
We have redoubled our efforts at reaching our neighborhood. How can I talk about a church plant without seriously making every effort at reaching my neighborhood?
Pray with us as we are asking the Lord to help me with my strength after a shift at work with my security job. The heat is getting to me these days.
Praise
While one couple left, the Lord has given us a brand new couple with missionary/servant hearts. The Lord has also arranged for us to meet another couple with some vision who long to join us when the husband retires next year. They are offering us some expertise to develop a website.

God has provided abundantly during our building construction. We have been blessed with workers both within the church and from the community. Most, if not all, have either volunteered their time or worked for a fraction of the normal pay rate.

Please pray for outreach efforts in the Black Creek community. And pray for the Holy Spirit’s working and leading.
Also, please pray for our follow-up with visitors, that it will be fruitful; and that many would come to know the Savior.
Pray for God’s timing on the final touches to the building and the date of our first worship service. Also, for guidance in setting the date for our building dedication service.

Voting at the upcoming Presbyterial meeting

When we meet in August, the one item we will vote on is moving the annual Presbyterial meeting to closer match the new yearly schedule. With the current calendar running Sept – Aug, having the Presbyterial meeting in August was appropriate. The Presbyterial year starting in Sept of 2011 runs until the end of Dec in 2012 with the next year starting Jan 2013 as we get back on a calendar year schedule.

The proposal that we will vote on is to move the meeting to the 3rd Saturday in October. That would October 20, 2012 for next year’s meeting.

According to the Bylaws in article III on Representation:
The voting body of this organization shall consist of:

1.  All officers as listed in Article IV of the Constitution
(That is: Presbyterial President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Past President.  Presbyterial Ministry chairmen: Spiritual Life, Missions and Outreach, Family Care, Historian)
2.  Chairmen of Standing Committees
3.  Past Presidents of First Presbyterial
4.  ARP Women’s Ministries Board members who are members of First Presbyterial
5. The President of the local church women’s organization – Alternate: her Vice President
6. The Treasurer of the local church women’s organization – Alternate: a board member in her local church women’s organization.
7.  Two representatives from each local church women’s organization

Notice the last 3 items in the list apply to your local church. One item of business to address before coming to Presbyterial would be identifying anyone who will attend as a delegate to vote and perhaps discuss the topic to be voted on so the delegate is prepared.
